Google AI Overviews and AI Mode for B2B SaaS sites
By being indexed and able to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google says nothing more is needed: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Google does not document in detail how sources are picked from eligible pages. Google offers four controls to limit how a page is used. It counts AI feature traffic inside its normal Search Console reports.
A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Google says no other requirements or special optimization apply.
Seer's 2025 data: 2.07% organic CTR when the brand was cited in the AI Overview, 0.94% when it was not.
Blocking snippets to stop being summarized. The same controls can remove the page as a source.
Use URL Inspection in Search Console on the ten most important pages to confirm they are indexed.
How does a page appear in Google AI Overviews?
By meeting ordinary search eligibility. Google's documentation sets out what applies.
| Question | Google's answer |
|---|---|
| Is special markup needed? | No new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup |
| What makes a page eligible? | It must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" |
| How is crawl access controlled? | Through robots.txt rules for Googlebot |
| How can use be limited? | "nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, or noindex" |
| Where is the traffic reported? | In Search Console's Performance report, under the Web search type |
Google describes the two features this way. AI Overviews "help people get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly." AI Mode "is particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed."
Which controls does Google offer?
Four, all of them existing search controls. None is specific to AI.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| noindex | Removes the page from Google Search, and so from AI features |
| nosnippet | Stops any snippet of the page being shown |
| data-nosnippet | Stops a marked part of the page being used in snippets |
| max-snippet | Sets a maximum length for snippets |
These controls cut both ways. Blocking snippets to avoid being summarized also removes the page as a source. On Seer Interactive's data, being cited was worth having: brands cited in an AI Overview had a 2025 organic click-through rate of 2.07% on informational queries, against 0.94% when not cited.
Does Google-Extended control AI Overviews?
Google does not say so. Google-Extended is a robots.txt token for managing whether content may be used "for training future generations of Gemini models" and for grounding. Google states that it "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search."
The AI features page names two tools for managing AI Overviews and AI Mode: robots.txt rules for Googlebot, and the snippet controls. The wider crawler picture is on the AI crawlers page.
What best practices does Google list?
Google lists ordinary practices. None is specific to AI:
- Allow crawling in robots.txt "and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure."
- Make important content available in textual form.
- Keep structured data matching the visible text on the page.
- Maintain internal links, page experience, images and video, and keep Merchant Center and Business Profile details current where they apply.
For a B2B SaaS site, the CDN point matters. Bot protection can block crawlers without anyone noticing. How to lay out pages is on the page structure page.
How much traffic do AI Overviews take?
A large share for the pages below them, in the studies read. Ahrefs found an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page, comparing December 2023 with December 2025 across 300,000 keywords. Seer Interactive found organic click-through rate of 1.31% with an AI Overview and 3.16% without one in December 2025.
Both studies show correlation. Neither looks at B2B SaaS alone. The detail, including how the effect changes by position, is on the AI search and clicks page.
How does AI Overview traffic show in Search Console?
Inside the totals. Google says sites in AI features "are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console," in the Performance report under the Web search type. There is no separate filter for AI Overviews or AI Mode in the documentation read.
So the effect is hard to see directly. Two checks help:
- Track click-through rate at stable positions. If a page holds its rank but gets fewer clicks per view, a feature such as an AI Overview is a likely cause.
- Search the main queries by hand. Note whether an AI Overview appears and which sources it cites. The method is in how to track AI search citations.
Frequently asked questions
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a Google Search feature that answers with AI-generated responses and links. Google describes it as particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons are needed. Pages appear as sources on the same terms as in AI Overviews: indexed and eligible for a snippet.
Can a site opt out of AI Overviews but stay in Google Search?
Partly. Google's controls are nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. Snippet controls limit how much of a page can be shown, which also limits its use in AI features. Google-Extended, Google says, does not affect inclusion in Google Search, and its documentation does not say it controls AI Overviews.
Does a page need to rank first to appear in an AI Overview?
Google's documentation does not say so. It says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, with no other requirements. Which eligible pages are chosen as supporting links is not documented in detail.
Does structured data help a page appear in AI Overviews?
Google says no special schema markup is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data the site already uses should match the visible text on the page. FAQ rich results, one common use of structured data, stopped appearing in Google Search on May 7, 2026.
How can AI Overview traffic be measured?
Not directly in Search Console. Google includes AI feature traffic in the overall Web search figures. Teams can track click-through rate at stable positions over time and check the main queries by hand to see whether an AI Overview appears and which sources it cites.
