How to track AI search citations for a B2B SaaS brand
- Build a fixed set of at least 20 buyer questions and run it in each AI tool every month.
- Record three things per answer: whether the brand is cited, whether it is described correctly and which competitors appear.
- Search Console counts AI Overview traffic inside overall Web search figures, so citation tracking has to be done by hand or with a tool.
- Check crawler access in server logs first. A site AI crawlers cannot reach is unlikely to be cited.
With a fixed set of buyer questions, run in each AI tool every month, and a simple record of what comes back. For each answer, note whether the brand is cited, whether it is described correctly and which competitors appear. Over a few months, the record shows which questions the brand owns, which it is missing and where it is misdescribed. Search Console cannot do this, because Google counts AI Overview traffic inside its overall Web totals.
The audit steps are adapted from a five-step method published by GrowthSpree in 2026, which reports no data, so only the method is used here. Search Console and crawler details come from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity documentation. The click figures come from Seer Interactive's AIO Impact on Google CTR: 2026 Update (April 24, 2026).
How can a B2B SaaS brand track its citations in AI search?
In five steps, with the first done once a quarter and the rest monthly.
| Step | What to do | How often |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Build the question set | 20 or more questions buyers ask before shortlisting | Quarterly review |
| 2. Run the questions | In each AI tool, with web search on where the tool offers it | Monthly |
| 3. Record citations | Whether the brand's pages appear as sources | Monthly |
| 4. Check accuracy | Whether the product, positioning and pricing are described correctly | Monthly |
| 5. Record competitors | Which competitors appear with the brand, and without it | Monthly |
The method names ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Bing Copilot. Google AI Overviews can be added by searching each question in Google.
Step 1: Which questions should be tracked?
The ones buyers ask before they talk to sales. The method groups them into five kinds, and a B2B SaaS set should cover each.
| Kind | Example for a fictional CRM |
|---|---|
| Discovery | What CRM suits a 50-person B2B sales team? |
| Comparison | How does Example CRM compare with its main rivals? |
| Use case | Which CRMs handle multi-currency deals well? |
| Validation | Is Example CRM secure enough for a regulated industry? |
| Pricing | How much does a CRM for 50 users cost per month? |
Good sources for the questions are sales call notes, support tickets, the site search box and Search Console queries. Once set, the list should stay fixed for the quarter so that months can be compared.
Step 2: How should the questions be run?
The same way each time. AI answers can change from one run to the next, so consistency matters more than volume.
- Use the same wording every month.
- Note the tool and mode. Answers with web search on can differ from those without it.
- Run each question more than once where time allows, and record how many runs cite the brand.
- Use a clean session, without personal history that could shape the answer.
Tracking software can automate the runs. The same rules apply: a fixed set, repeated runs and a record of the tool and date.
Steps 3 to 5: What should be recorded?
One row per question, per tool, per month.
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Date and tool | October 2026, Perplexity |
| Question | Which CRMs handle multi-currency deals well? |
| Brand cited? | Yes, pricing page |
| Described correctly? | No: lists an old plan name |
| Competitors cited | Two named rivals |
| Pages cited from the brand's site | /pricing |
Over three months, the record shows a citation rate for each tool, a list of errors to correct and a list of questions where competitors are cited instead.
What should be checked before tracking starts?
Whether the AI crawlers can reach the site. A brand that blocks them is unlikely to be cited, and tracking will only confirm it.
- robots.txt. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce visibility in user search results. Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot.
- CDN and firewall. Google lists "any CDN or hosting infrastructure" as places crawling must be allowed.
- Server logs. Successful requests from the search crawlers confirm access.
The setup is in robots.txt for AI crawlers.
What can Search Console and analytics add?
Context on clicks, not on citations. Google says traffic from AI features is "included in the overall search traffic in Search Console," under the Web search type. There is no separate AI Overview report in the documentation read.
Two signals still help:
- Click-through rate at stable positions on informational queries. A fall without a ranking change suggests an AI Overview or another feature.
- Referral visits from AI tools, which show in analytics when a tool links to the site and a user clicks.
Seer Interactive's data shows why citation tracking and click tracking belong together. Across 53 brands in 2025, informational queries where the brand was cited in the AI Overview had 2.07% organic click-through rate, against 0.94% where it was not. The wider data is in AI Overviews and click-through rate.
How should the results be used?
To decide what to fix next. Each kind of gap points to a different job.
- Not cited for a question the site answers. The page may not answer it directly. Rewrite the opening so the answer comes first.
- Not cited because no page answers it. Write one.
- Described wrongly. Correct the brand's own pages first, since outdated pricing or plan names on the site can be the source. Then check public profiles and directories.
- A competitor cited instead. Compare the two pages honestly and close the gap in substance, not formatting.
Page guidance is on the page structure page.
FAQ
How often should AI citations be checked?
Monthly is a practical rhythm, with the question list reviewed each quarter. AI answers vary between runs and tools update often, so a single check proves little. A fixed set run every month shows the trend and makes changes from new content or fixes visible.
Which AI tools should a B2B SaaS brand track?
The ones its buyers use. One published method checks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Bing Copilot monthly. Google AI Overviews can be added by searching the same questions in Google and noting the sources shown. Sales calls can reveal which tools buyers mention.
Can citation tracking be automated?
Yes, with tracking software that runs a fixed set of questions across AI tools on a schedule. The same rules apply as for manual checks: fixed wording, repeated runs, a record of the tool and date, and a check of whether the brand is described correctly, not only whether it is named.
Why does an AI tool describe a brand incorrectly?
Possibly because it found outdated or unclear information, on the brand's own site or elsewhere. Old pricing pages, retired plan names and inconsistent product descriptions are likely causes. Correcting the site's own pages first, then public profiles and directories, gives the tools accurate material to use.
Does Search Console show AI citations?
No. Search Console shows clicks and impressions, and Google says AI feature traffic is included in the overall Web search figures. It does not show whether a page was cited in an AI Overview or how the brand was described. Citation tracking has to be done separately.
Conclusion
Tracking AI search citations takes a fixed set of buyer questions, run monthly in each AI tool, and a simple record of citations, accuracy and competitors. Crawler access comes first, because a site AI crawlers cannot reach is unlikely to be cited. Search Console and analytics add the click side but cannot show citations. Over a few months, the record turns into a clear list of pages to write, fix or correct.
