Answer engine optimization for B2B SaaS: what AEO is
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of making a website easy for AI search tools to find, read and cite. Those tools include Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude. For a B2B SaaS company, the goal is to be the source an AI answer names when a buyer asks about the category. AEO builds on SEO: Google says its AI features need no special optimization beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.
AEO is making pages easy for AI search tools to find, read and cite. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
Ahrefs found AI Overviews correlate with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page.
AEO checklists that promise citation rates. No study with a stated sample shows a format that guarantees citation.
Check that robots.txt and the CDN let the AI search crawlers in, then ask five AI tools the buyers' top questions.
What is answer engine optimization for B2B SaaS?
It is SEO extended to systems that answer instead of listing links. The table shows what changes and what stays the same.
| Traditional search | AI search | |
|---|---|---|
| What the user sees | A list of links | A written answer, with some sources linked |
| How a page gets in | Crawled, indexed and ranked | Crawled, indexed, then chosen as a source |
| Main goal | Rank and earn the click | Be cited, and still earn the click |
| Crawlers involved | Googlebot, Bingbot | Googlebot, plus OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and others |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks, traffic | Citations, mentions, clicks from AI tools |
The overlap is large. A page that cannot be crawled, indexed or understood will not be cited either.
Why does AEO matter for B2B SaaS now?
Because AI Overviews correlate with lower click-through rates for the top results. Two studies read for this site put numbers on it.
- Ahrefs, February 2026. Across 300,000 keywords, an AI Overview "correlates with a 58% lower average clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page." The study compared December 2023 with December 2025, on desktop.
- Seer Interactive, April 2026. Across 53 brands and 5.47M queries, organic click-through rate on queries with an AI Overview fell to 1.31% in December 2025, against 3.16% on queries without one.
Seer also found a reason to care about citation. Brands cited in the AI Overview earned 120% more organic clicks per impression than brands that were not cited. Seer adds: "We cannot claim causation. Higher-authority brands are also more likely to be cited." The detail is on the AI search and clicks page.
What do the platforms say about appearing in AI answers?
Less than AEO guides suggest. Each platform publishes a few clear rules.
| Platform | What its documentation says |
|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible |
| ChatGPT search | "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" |
| Claude | Blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce a site's visibility in user search results |
| Perplexity | Recommends allowing PerplexityBot, which surfaces and links sites in its results |
The practical reading: crawler access is the one hard requirement each platform documents. Everything else is ordinary good practice. Crawler rules are on the AI crawlers page.
Which AEO claims should be treated with care?
Claims that a format causes citation. Many AEO guides say AI tools prefer tables, FAQs, year stamps or a set word count. No study with a stated sample read for this site shows that any of these cause citation.
They can still be good writing. A direct answer in the first paragraph, a clear table and a short FAQ help human readers and make a page easy to quote. Google also asks that structured data "matches the visible text on the page." The difference is between doing these things because they make the page clearer and expecting them to guarantee citation. Structure is covered on the page structure page.
Where should a B2B SaaS company start?
With access, then content, then measurement.
- Check crawler access. Allow the search crawlers of each AI tool in robots.txt, and check that the CDN or firewall does not block them. Google names CDN and hosting infrastructure.
- Check the pages can be read. Google asks that "important content is available in textual form." Content that only appears after a script runs, or inside images, is harder to use.
- Answer buyers' questions directly. Pages that state the answer, with the evidence beside it, are easier to cite.
- Track citations. Ask the same set of category questions in each AI tool each month and record which sources appear. The method is on the tracking AI visibility page.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet, so search engine basics still decide which pages are available to cite. Other AI tools run their own crawlers, which adds work, but the underlying page has to be just as findable and readable.
Gartner predicted in February 2024 that "traditional search engine volume will drop 25%" by 2026. That was a forecast, not a measurement, and it described a shift in share, not the end of search. The two approaches are compared in AEO vs SEO for B2B SaaS.
Frequently asked questions
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It means making web pages easy for AI search tools, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude, to find, read and cite in their answers. It is sometimes called generative engine optimization, or GEO, and covers much of the same ground.
Is AEO different from SEO?
Partly. Both depend on pages being crawlable, indexable and clearly written. AEO adds the crawlers of AI tools beyond Google and Bing, and it measures success by citations in AI answers as well as by clicks. Google says its AI features need no optimization beyond normal search eligibility.
Do AI Overviews reduce traffic to B2B SaaS sites?
The studies read point that way. Ahrefs found AI Overviews correlate with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page across 300,000 keywords. Neither Ahrefs nor Seer Interactive breaks the figures out for B2B SaaS, so the effect on a given site needs checking in its own data.
Does a B2B SaaS site need special markup for AI search?
Not for Google. Google's documentation says no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema markup are needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data that already exists should match the visible text on the page, as with any search feature.
How long does AEO take to work?
It depends on the tool. OpenAI and Perplexity say robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach their search systems. No platform documents how long it takes to be cited, so a fixed set of questions checked every month is the practical way to see whether changes are working. Monthly tracking shows the trend.
